by Melissa Pepper, ENC Communications Intern
Hi, I’m Melissa Pepper, a soon to be graduate from Chico State where I have been studying Communications and Public Affairs, Public Relations, and Fine Art Photography with an emphasis on dark room. I was raised in Huntington Beach, CA and have spent most of my life either in the water or on the water, hiking, taking pictures and of course, studying or writing.
My journey with the Newport Back Bay began in junior high when I joined the swimming team at the YMCA overlooking the beautiful trails. My junior year of high school, I joined the rowing team at the Newport Aquatic Center and was able to enjoy the water every day. My first years of college were spent rowing for the University of Tulsa and studying Communications while also being a part of the TUTV team. I moved back to sweet home California to complete more credits and began coaching Master’s rowing for Newport Sea Base Rowing. Transferring to California State University, Chico, I fell in love with how the campus incorporates its surrounding nature, and the towns endless hiking trails and hidden gems. The university has a focus on sustainability and nature, which has inspired me to do the same.
I have been a rowing coach for two years now and have also spent time as a nanny and volunteering with children and teens. While working with the TUTV team, I worked their social media platforms. I have earned certifications with First Aid, Hootsuite, Youth Protection Training, SafeSport, and California Boating Education.
I decided to join the communications internship crew for the ENC because of the down to earth environment of the staff, the love of nature from everyone that walks through the doors (especially the campers!), and the opportunity to continue my journey in the Back Bay.
I’m excited to be able to immerse myself in the camp while completing my internship surrounded by beautiful scenery in the Back Bay and at the ENC. I’m also grateful for the opportunity to explore and expand my knowledge and experience in each field I have been studying.
