Thank you for wanting to volunteer at the Environmental Nature Center! There are quite a few volunteer opportunities for Scouts at the ENC. Here are some ideas:
Volunteer at our Fall or Spring Faire!
Our Fall Faire is usually in Mid to late October and our Spring Faire is usually the first Sunday in May. Fall and Spring Faire are our largest fundraisers for the Center and we recruit a lot of volunteers to help. Scouts can help by face painting or helping younger scouts make a craft. You can sign up to volunteer at our next Faire HERE.
Become a Discovery Table Docent and help teach others about Nature.
Spend some time greeting guests and encouraging awareness and appreciation of the environment as a Discovery Table Docent at the Environmental Nature Center in Newport Beach or at the ENC Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary in Modjeska Canyon! Relax in the shade and greet guests as they enter the gate to the Nature Center trails. Provide basic information about the facility, reminders to observe nature quietly and stay on the trails. We will train you to provide basic information about rotating Discovery Cart exhibits! Examples of Discovery Cart exhibits might be animal skulls (discuss the difference between predators and prey!), bird nests/eggs, animal evidence (scat & tracks), or pelts (camouflage). In the Spring/Summer this position will also include volunteering in the Butterfly House when adequate butterflies are present. Contact us to find out when the next training is scheduled.
Organize a Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Drive!
The ENC always has a number of items on our wish list that we need help collecting – from strawberry baskets to yarn! To donate supplies, please drop them off during our business hours or bring them with you when you participate in one of our scout badge programs. View our Wish List HERE.
Be a Habitat Helper!
Assist the ENC on the grounds, with administrative work, or program preparation! An adult must accompany children younger than 14 years of age. Check on upcoming dates HERE. If you’d like to be on our volunteer email list to be informed of future opportunities, just let us know!
Be a Leader in Training
“Leaders in Training” are amazing high school students that help with Nature Camps during school breaks. This is a perfect opportunity for volunteers who enjoy working with children, and it provides an excellent experience to include on a resume or college application. Although it is a volunteer position, applicants must interview to be eligible. Scouts, not parents or Scout Leaders, are responsible for communicating with ENC staff regarding the Leaders in Training opportunity. Click HERE to learn more.
Bronze, Silver & Gold Award Projects
ENC Staff have been helping Scouts earn their Bronze, Silver & Gold Awards for over a decade. If you are working on your Award and you’re considering the ENC as the beneficiary of your project, please contact our Enrichment Specialist. We always enjoy hearing your ideas for projects, so please have some in mind before contacting us.
Eagle Scout Projects
The ENC has a continual list of projects needed for the Center. These projects vary in scope and difficulty. Feel free to suggest your own. You are part of our community and the ENC is an expression of the ideas of many people. If your idea is compatible, we will be happy to assist you in any way so that it meets our guidelines. Visit our Eagle Scout page for more info.
