The ENC Under Threat: City Council Update

For over 50 years, the Environmental Nature Center (ENC) has been a cornerstone of hands‑on environmental education, a haven for native wildlife, and a green refuge for our community. In 2019, we expanded with the ENC Nature Preschool, bringing nature‑based learning to our youngest students. Today, more than 50,000 visitors a year explore our trails and programs.

City Council Outcome
This week the Newport Beach City Council declined to consider removing the neighboring 1.5‑acre parcel at 1501 E. 16th Street from the City’s General Plan—leaving it designated as a housing opportunity site. That decision keeps the door open for up to three‑story residential buildings with rooftop patios—potentially 34 units—right next to the ENC and Preschool.

Why This Matters
That development would overlook preschool play areas and nature trails, eroding privacy for children learning and playing. It would disrupt a fragile ecosystem—casting shadows on native plants, replacing views of sky and distant hills with concrete and glass, and making traffic near our local schools even more hazardous. Most critically, it would undermine our ability to provide transformative environmental education to the community.

What’s Next
This fight is far from over. We’re already formulating next steps and will keep you informed. In the meantime:
