What do Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs have in common?

menWhat do successful tech engineers like Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs have in common? You might think they are incredibly smart, innovative, creative or even filthy rich, but you might be forgetting one key characteristic. They are all MEN! The STEM fields—Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics—have always had a woman problem. Men tend to dominate the tech industry and for women, the numbers aren’t getting any better. Startling statistics from the Girl Scout Research Institute reveals that more than half (57%) of all young girls say that girls don’t typically consider a career in STEM.

With such grim numbers on the horizon, Girls Inc. of Orange County is partnering up with the Environmental Nature Center in Newport Beach on February 19 to try and stop this vicious cycle and get young girls interested in the riveting fields of science and engineering.

Girls Inc_@GirlsIncOC will be @ENC_NewportBch for a free preview of their mobile robotics program on 11:21:15, 9AM to 12PM!Girls Inc.’s STEM Club Art and Robotics program is a one-day event that offers girls in 3rd – 8th grade the fun and exciting opportunity to discover the creative process of robotic engineering and art. The young engineers will learn about CODE and take part in the very interesting EV3 Mindstorm program, during which students learn the basics of robotic construction and programming.

“Students will discover how technology relates to the environment and real life situations,” says ENC Education Director Lori Whalen.“ They will use their newly-acquired knowledge to build their own Spirograph robot, which they can take home at the end of the event.”

So join Girls Inc. and the ENC to help open young girls minds to the wonders of engineering and show that the future of STEM fields doesn’t just belong to the boys anymore.

Registration for the event is required and can be obtained at encenter.org. – Alejandro Reynoso, ENC Communications Intern
