It is spring and the butterflies are officially back in town. The grand re-opening of the ENC Butterfly House will be during the Spring Fair on Sunday, May 4th. The butterfly house will feature various butterfly species native to Orange County, including Mourning Cloak, Monarch, and California Dogface (our state butterfly). The butterfly house will also feature many Orange County native host and nectar plants that the butterflies depend on to live. You might even find caterpillars and eggs on them! Come to this year’s Spring Fair to find out more about Orange County native butterflies and plants.
In addition to the grand re-opening of the butterfly house, the Spring Faire will also feature a native plant sale where you can purchase plants such as white sage, hummingbird sage and blue eyes grass, which will help attract birds and butterflies to your yard! Native monkeyflower, a host plant for the beautiful buckeye butterfly, will also be available. If you become a member of the ENC at the Faire, we will give you a native plant to take home! Native plants also help you save water, reduce pesticide use, and showcase color in your garden throughout the year.
Along with the opening of the butterfly house and native plant sale, the Spring Faire will feature other various activities including a children’s art show and contest, crafts, face painting and henna tattoos, live animals, entertainment around the “Fire Circle Stage,” and the Taste of Orange County. We hope to see you there! For more information, please visit our website. – Marisa Rojas, ENC Intern
