From the Deepest Ocean Depths to the Starry Sky at the ENC!

Chris Welsh, of Newport Beach cruises by his 125 feet Catamaran he named Cheyenne in Newport Beach on Thursday. The Cheyenne, will be a launching pad for a deep sea submarine, which Welsh will pilot to explore the deepest places in the 5 Oceans. //ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: cu.0219.cheyenneÐ 02/12/15 Ð ED CRISOSTOMO, ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER- Story on Chris Welsh, a Newport Beach resident who wants to use his boat, the Cheyenne, as a launching pad for a deep sea submarine. The submarine would explore some of the deepest points of the ocean, like the Mariana Trench. Might have some issues photographing the submarine (apparently he has defense contracts for the sub), but thought could take photos of Welsh with the boat.

Spring is nature’s way of saying “lets party!” With March approaching and Spring right around the corner the Environmental Nature Center is excited to kick off the new month and season with some exciting upcoming events.

To dive into the month of March, the ENC will be presenting our Adult Speaker Series featuring local resident and Newport Harbor High School alumnus Chris Welsh, chief pilot for Deep Sub LLC. Deep Sub LLC operates a deep diving submersible and mothership capable of going to depths of 36,000 feet. This event will be held on March 2, 2016 at 6:00 pm at the Environmental Nature Center. At the event Welsh will discuss the sub’s design, dive locations, planned exploration, and scientific goals. He will also share his company’s objective to accomplish “Five Dives” to the deepest places in each of the five ocean basins! Register at encenter.org or call Maria Zalesky at (949) 645-8489 x 118

Our next stellar event will be Stories Under the Stars for Adults. This event will be held Tuesday, March 8th at 7pm. ENC’s amazing Naturalist Leslie Helliwell will be guiding participants on the darkest night of the month under the New Moon to learn to identify some of the major constellations and enjoy the tales that the Greek storytellers told. Come sit under the stars listen to many cultures stories about the stars and their meanings. The event is $6 and $5 for members.

#LittleNaturalists at the #EnvironmentalNatureCenter on February 6! #OutdoorEducation for 3 – 5 year olds and their grown-upsWe also have exciting events for our little naturalist friends next month. Our Little Naturalist programs are outdoor experiential education classes for 3-5 year olds and their adult guardians. Our activities are designed to encourage exploration, discovery, and to enrich a child’s emerging physical and cognitive skills. All of our Little Naturalist programs are $6 per participants ($5 for members) and pre-payment is required. The first Little Naturalist program we will be presenting is Magnificent Muuuuud! This event will be on March 7 from 9:30 to 10:30 am. Our next program that will be slithering in the middle of the month is Spectacular Snakes! Little Naturalist: Spectacular Snakes will be held March 22, 9:30-10:30 pm.

At end the month of March we will be hosting Local Wildlife with Sandrine Bizjaux Scherson. On March 24th at 6 pm, Sandrine will give a casual presentation featuring beautiful photographs of local wildlife. A short intriguing story about when where she took the photos, as well as some neat, interesting facts about each animal will accompany each slide. “I had the opportunity to watch a presentation by Sandrine recently and I was as impressed by her knowledge of local wildlife as I was by her images. She gave such a pleasant presentation that I decided to invite her to give it again at the ENC,” said Lori Whalen, ENC Education Director. – Aaysia Shelton, ENC Communications Intern
