Newport Beach Magazine: Learning in the Great Outdoors

October/November, 2018 – Although newport Beach is home to some gorgeous stretches of coastline, there are few natural areas available to explorers, young and old. Whether because of the city’s big ticket property values or due to the natural hustle and bustle of our suburban sprawl, there seem to be fewer opportunities for locals to get outdoors in Orange County. Since 1972 the ENC has been working to change that, offering a 5 acre property complete with walking trails, waterfalls, and 15 different ecosystems in addition to a LEED certified center with educational exhibits. Newport Beach, Calif., November 30, 2018 – The Environmental Nature Center (ENC) will present Winter Nature Camps in three sessions: December 17-20, December 26-28 and January 2-4.  Full day camp is from 9am to 3pm, and half day camp is from 9AM to 1PM. November 2, 2018 – Construction has begun on the highly anticipated ENC Nature Preschool. The preschool, located on 1.3 acres bordering the Environmental Nature Center’s (ENC’s) Redwood Forest, will be the community’s first nature preschool and nature play area. “We are so excited to see the progress being made on the ENC Nature Preschool,” said ENC Nature Preschool Director Sue Bierlich. “The school will offer positive nature experiences to young children in our community, and provide so many important opportunities for them to become familiar with the natural world by playing – and learning – while surrounded by and exploring nature.” Read the entire article.

Laguna Beach Independent: Anneliese Students Earn Honors in ENC Art Contest 

May 24, 2018: Young artists from Anneliese Schools won various prizes at the Environmental Nature Center’s seventh annual Ecosystems of California Youth Art Showcase. Joseph Gerges’sixth grade class used acrylic on paper to create seascapes of the California coast for the contest. OC Register: 2018 Southern California wildflower show’s a disappointing sequel to 2017

April 9, 2018: …Down the coast in Orange County, color is bursting at the Environmental Nature Center in Newport Beach. Lori Whalen, assistant director, said visitors will find blooms starting to pop on California poppies, Hooker’s evening primroses, Island snapdragons, sugar bushes, brittlebushes and California encelias. Whalen said that she recently visited a couple of coastal hot spots for wildflowers, the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve and Crystal Cove, and came across wishbone bush, blue-eyed grass, fiddleneck, Indian paintbrush and monkey flower. Read the entire article.

School Planning and Management: New School Connecting Preschoolers with Nature

February 20, 2018: Construction started Feb. 15 on a new nature-based preschool facility for the Environmental Nature Center (ENC), designed to create a hands-on, outdoor learning environment and demonstrate sustainable values for preschool students. February 1, 2018: Recently our community lost an individual whose impact will continue for generations. I remember several years ago sitting with Elizabeth Steele at the Environmental Nature Center, her sight nearly gone but her vision as clear as ever.
